§ Overview
North Bank had product-market fit with developers and indie founders. To reach SMBs, the brand had to feel less like a fintech and more like a bank you'd recommend to your parents — without losing its edge.
01 / Problem
The original identity — gradients, emoji-forward copy, app-first — read as a side project to anyone over 35. Acquisition outside the core audience had stalled for three quarters.
02 / Approach
We ran interviews with 18 SMB owners who'd churned during onboarding. The word that came up again and again was 'serious.' Not stiff — serious. We translated that into a system that felt institutional without feeling corporate.
03 / Solution
A custom serif wordmark. A restrained two-color system (ink on cream). Motion reserved for moments of confirmation, never decoration. A new voice: declarative, specific, unafraid of a period.
04 / Outcome
SMB signups up 58% in the first 90 days. Branded search volume doubled. The team reported that pitching enterprise partners 'suddenly got easier.'
