§ Overview

Orbit spent a decade supplying cafés. Retail meant shelf competition — and shelves are unkind to wholesale-minded design.

01 / Problem

Their existing bags worked in cafés because baristas explained them. On shelves, they vanished. Blend names were poetic but illegible at arm's length. Repeat purchase was soft.

02 / Approach

We studied shelf behavior in three markets. The pattern: people buy what they can describe to themselves in under four seconds. We rebuilt the packaging around a one-line promise — the flavor, not the farm.

03 / Solution

A flat, typographic system where the blend name is the hero. A color-coded roast scale on the side gusset, readable from the end-cap. Farm and origin info moved to a QR-linked story page — where the people who care can actually dig in.

04 / Outcome

Retail sell-through up 74%. Added to two national grocery chains. Sell-in conversations with new accounts shortened from 6 weeks to 10 days.
